iOS 18's third developer beta enhances customization by introducing a dynamic wallpaper that changes colors over time. Users can also tint home screen app icons and place them freely, with some third-party apps gaining dark mode icons. These features are currently exclusive to the developer beta, with a public beta expected in July and a full release in the fall.
Google has updated Google Maps and Waze, adding improved user interface elements to make it easier for users to find their destinations and be aware of traffic situations. Google Maps now includes a report button for users to send reports about road issues quickly, and it also highlights building entrances and nearby parking lots. Waze has added the ability to recognize different types of traffic cameras and a new road events feature to provide better traffic understanding.
iOS 18 introduces RCS support for messaging, enabling chats between iPhone and Android users to have many features core to other messaging apps. Cross-platform chats will now support high-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts, and more reliable group messaging. Not all carriers support RCS on iPhone yet. Apple's RCS support doesn't include cross-platform end-to-encryption between iOS and Android.
